In 1692, in the Ipswich Colony of Massachusetts, five families of powerful witches commit to a covenant of silence to protect themselves against the witch hunters, but one of the families transgress their pact and is banished from their lands. Along the centuries, the power and the covenant are transmitted through their descendants and when the eldest son is eighteen years old, he ascends to a higher power. In the present days, four wizards teenage friends are in high school and their leader Caleb Danvers is close to his eighteenth birthday and consequently to ascend. He has just met Sarah Wenham and they are dating, when the appearance of darkling and supernatural dreams haunt the group. Sooner they find an evil warlock, descendant of the fifth ancient family that wants to strip Caleb's power.

When a new kid by the name of Chase Collins, transfers into the elite Spencer Academy, 4 boys get suspicious. the four boys are what people call the sons of Ipswitch. They were 4 of the original 5 families to colonize Ipswitch. The 5th, is said to have been killed during the Salem witch hunts. when the 4 boys, Caleb, Pogue, Reid and, Tyler, befriend Chase, weird things start to happen. It turns out that Chase is a descendant of the 5th blood line, and "one of them". We find out that the reason that Chase is here, it to get the other members of the covenant's powers. by having them "will it" to him. On Caleb's birthday, Caleb and Chase get into a fight to the death. Caleb ends up killing Chase (or so we think). Chase gets thrown into a fire and his body is never found, so the boys assume that he is dead, saving himself, the covenant, and all of their loved ones.
